Bakery History

David and Sue met in Te Puke working in the Kiwifruit industry in the 80’s.  Their plan was to go into business together to make some cash to buy their first orchard.

So the journey into the Baking industry began.hungerpangs.jpg

The First Bakery - Hunger Pangs

In 1989 Sue & David Blomquist purchased a rundown cake shop ‘Norma’s Cake Kitchen’ and transformed it into a thriving bakery and renamed it ‘Hunger Pangs 10th Ave.  The bakery is still there today as Café 10th Ave opposite the Warehouse.

Here David made the best pies Tauranga.  So good that other cafes and dairy’s bought them to sell in their own stores.

They made everything from scratch as they still do today. They made all their own cakes, slices, quiche, muffins, cookies and scones.  The recipes came from their Mothers and Grandmothers.  Some real good old favourites like eccles and fly cemetery.  The Edmonds Cook Book also came in handy!

They also made a range of organic gluten free and wheat free muesli bars and slices…a true pioneer in the day.

After a brief absence in the food industry a wedding and two young children on the scene in 1999 David and Sue bought the first bread franchise in the Bay of Plenty, Brumby’s Tauranga.  Brumby’s Bayfair soon followed.

The Tauranga locals loved the new varieties of bread that David and his bakers baked fresh daily.  The likes of Ciabatta, Turkish and Pane de Casa were an exciting addition in the late 90’s.

Delivering Fresh Bread to Restaurants

Many of the best restaurants did and still do buy their bread from David and his team.  You will often see the delivery van cruising the service lanes in both Tauranga and Mt Maunganui.  Delivering fresh bread 7 days a week to the busy chefs.

Also during this time they won two local and industry awards including:

2001 Tauranga West Pac New Business of the Year Award

2001  Regional Award for Best Franchise in the Bay of Plenty

Muffin Boutique

muffinboutique-400.jpgIn 1992 David and Sue entered the Café Scene in Maunganui Rd, Downtown, Mt Maunganui and opened the first Muffin Shop in New Zealand called ‘Muffin Boutique’.  A second store soon followed in Devonport Rd, CBD, Tauranga.

All varieties of muffins were made. Sweet like double chocolate, apricot and cream cheese, raspberry and white chocolate, coffee and walnut, caramel and chocolate, lemon, orange and date, sultana banana Bran.  Savoury like sundried tomato and olive, cheese and bacon etc.

Finest Coffee in The Mount

With the guidence of Burton Hollis Coffee House they produced a damm good coffee and soon word of mouth spread to the locals.  Muffin Boutique became a destination for espresso.

These stores were to be franchised but were sold instead.

Blomquists Bakery

In 2010 a new path opened and David and Sue finally opened the store proudly bearing their own name – Blomquists Bakery.

A new beginning and the journey and success continues…………………
